CAKES ‘n THINGS
For decades, Linda Pettitt has been baking and cooking her way into the hearts and tummies of Tehachapi.
From a very early age, I had a love for cooking and baking. My Mother Idy was a Southern Belle who loved to cook and made mealtimes a special time in our home. My first cooking experience was in third grade, where I baked my first batch of cookies. As I grew older, I loved to try different types of foods and recipes and began learning new cooking and baking techniques as a teenager.
Through my career in teaching for the Tehachapi Unified School District, my love for cooking continued. Catering for church, school and community functions started to consume my time. Of course, I have also baked cakes for family and friends for birthdays, weddings, showers and other special events.
After retiring from teaching, my niece and I opened Idy’s Restaurant in Tehachapi where I made all the desserts and rolls each day and cinnamon rolls on the weekends. After selling the restaurant, I opened my own bakery, Linda’s Cakes ‘n Things and quickly outgrew the small building on Tehachapi Blvd.
With the passage of the Home Cottage Law in 2013, I now enjoy a more relaxed environment baking all my cakes, desserts, chocolates, cupcakes, pies, specialty cookies, cake pops and custom cake drops and candies in the heart of my home – my kitchen!
I have studied with many outstanding cake artists including Kerry Vincent, who often judged cake competitions on The Food Network; Ron Ben-Israel of Ron Ben-Israel Cakes in New York City, and Bronwen Weber, a very popular Texan cake artist who was often seen in cake competitions.
A party perfectionist, I continued to hone my skills and master baking with various cakes, caramel confections, and chocolate making at The Gourmandise School of Sweets and Savories in Santa Monica, California. I bake all the luscious chocolate treats for the Annual Tehachapi Wine Walks.
I still enjoy creating unique desserts for all occasions and am always told how “moist,” in addition to “delicious,” my cakes are, which is an art. My passion has only grown through the years, and I am fortunate to do what I love most, after my family and multiple grandchildren. It is my way of making others happy to celebrate life’s best moments, memorably!
So let’s make a cake to remember your special occasion!
