For decades, Linda Pettitt has been baking and cooking her way into the hearts and tummies of Tehachapi.

From a very early age, I have had a love for cooking and baking. My Mother (Idy), a southern belle, loved to cook and made mealtimes a special time in our home. She was very encouraging and allowed me to cook at any time in her kitchen. My first cooking experience was making cookies when I was in the third grade. As I grew older, I loved to try different types of foods and recipes, and began learning new cooking and baking techniques as a teenager.

Through my career in teaching for the Tehachapi Unified School District, my love for cooking continued. Catering for church, school and community functions started to consume my time. Of course, I have also baked cakes for family and friends for birthdays, weddings, showers and other special events.

After retiring from teaching, my niece and I opened Idy's Restaurant in Tehachapi where I made all the desserts and rolls each day and cinnamon rolls on the weekends. After selling the restaurant, I opened my own bakery, Linda's Cakes 'n Things and quickly outgrew the small building on Tehachapi Blvd. I then went into partnership with opening the Tehachapi Culinary Studio.

At the Studio, I helped with catering and continued to bake all kinds of desserts and cakes. The hectic pace of larger catering jobs began to be too much. Thanks to the Home Cottage Law, I now enjoy a more relaxed environment where I teach classes and bake all my cakes, desserts, cupcakes, pies, specialty cookies and candies from home.

I have studied many outstanding cake artists including Kerry Vincent, who often judges cake competitions on The Food Network; Ron Ben-Israel of Ron Ben-Israel Cakes in New York City, and Bronwen Weber, a very popular cake artist from Texas who is often seen in cake competitions. I have also taken classes at The Gourmandise School of Sweets and Savories located in Santa Monica, California where I am expanding my skills in various cakes, caramel confections, chocolate making and the newest craze in the bakery world, French macaroons. I bake all the chocolate for the Annual Tehachapi Valentine Wine Walk.

I love taking these classes because I not only learn about baking, but I get to meet many wonderful people from all over the country who share the same love of baking.

I enjoy creating special desserts for all occasions and believe that it is my way of making others happy and sharing some of the beautiful things in the world.
